In this post I would like to point out an interesting and useful service/invention by a twenty-six year old Italian, Davide Marrone, which earned him the invitation, together with the four telecommunications giants (Tim, Vodafone, Wind, H3g), to the Ministry of Economic Development from Mr. Prezzi, Roberto Sambuco. The lucky system for sending almost free messages is called Skebby (http://www.skebby.it) and below is a quick explanation of what it is. Skebby is the mobile phone program, which can be downloaded for free, for sending free SMS via the Internet from your mobile phone. Defined as the "Skype of SMS", it works on all mobile phones without changing operator, number and without a new contract.
See Wikipedia Skebby is based on an innovative client-server Uruguay Mobile Number List technological solution, and uses the mobile phone's Internet connection to offer free SMS via the Internet. To reduce costs, Davide Marrone's company does not use the normal GSM network but the Internet connection, which is much cheaper in transmitting data. To use the system, simply download the program onto your mobile phone from the site (65,000 have done so so far). From that moment on, you pay a cent or nothing to send a text message to another Skebby user, while you pay 6 to 8 cents to send a message to any other user.
In short, half of the 10-15 cents of all the other companies. The "trick" is buying in bulk. «Just buy messages from foreign intermediaries – explains the creator – and the price drops. If an Italian supplier sells text messages for around 5.5 cents, abroad it drops to 4, even if the seller is the same". The low-cost text message instead intrigued Mister Prezzi, who summoned the twenty-six year old from Como (and Skebby's business manager, Luigi Orsi Carbone) for a half-hour private conversation. «We were the only company without a network that was invited. Our idea – he underlines – was to illustrate the situation and the paradoxes in comparison with Europe, not to wage war on the communication giants.
