What is Hotlinking?
Bandwidth theft or "hotlinking" is direct linking to a web site's files (images, video, etc.). An example would be using an <img> tag to display a JPEG image you found on someone else's web page so it will appear on your own site, eBay auction listing, weblog, forum message post, etc.
Bandwidth refers to the amount of data transferred from a web site to a user's computer. When you view a web page, you are using that site's bandwidth to display the files. Since web hosts charge based on the amount of data transferred, bandwidth is an issue. If a site is over its monthly bandwidth, it's billed for the extra data or taken offline.
What Not To Do:
If a member fills a graphics request, do not use that link on your forum, as the filled may and has the right to delete that image later on, if he or she chooses to.
It is best for you to save the image to your computer and upload it yourself.
DO NOT, click on a image, right click view it's properties and upload that image URL to an image hosting account.
This is an ILLEGAL way of uploading an image on the internet.
Doing this, causes the server on the site that you uploaded the image from to use up more space than it needs to.
So DO NOT upload images any way, other than the way that's explained below in 'What To Do.'
What To Do:
If a member fills a request for you or you would like to get any images off the internet.. right click on that image, click Save As, give the image a name and save it to your computer.
Once the image is saved on your computer go to either Photobucket, Imageshack or Tinypic.
Click upload, browse for the image on your computer.
Once you have found it, click UPLOAD.
You now have legally uploaded the image.
